Wine Glass, U+1F377

The official Unicode name is WINE GLASS. It was encoded in Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and it is the only stemmed wine vessel in the standard. Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft all draw it the same way in outline: a stemmed glass, tilted a few degrees, holding red wine to about a third of the bowl. The differences are cosmetic – stem length, the amount of highlight on the glass, how dark the red sits. Nobody’s version is empty and nobody’s version is white.

Two wine glasses

There is no two-glasses wine character. You have two options and they say different things. 🍷🍷 is two wine glasses side by side, which reads as “a drink for each of us”. Clinking Glasses, U+1F942, is a single character showing two glasses meeting, which reads as a toast – but the glasses in it are drawn as flutes on most platforms, so it is closer to sparkling wine than to a red. Pick by what you mean, not by which is fewer characters.

Empty wine glass

Unicode has no empty wine glass. Some platform designs draw U+1F377 lightly enough that at small sizes the wine barely registers, which is where the idea comes from, but there is no separate codepoint and no variant you can select. If you need “the glass is empty” you have to write it.

Looking for a wine glass symbol rather than an emoji

There is no line-art, typographic wine glass in the symbol blocks the way there is a heart or a star. The generic vessel characters that do exist – Cup On Black Square (⛾, U+26FE) and Square Cup (⊔, U+2294) – are not wine glasses and will not read as one. For this shape, the emoji is the character.

On the keyboard

Device How to get it
iPhone and iPad Emoji keyboard, Food & Drink section, or type “wine” in the emoji search field
Android Gboard emoji tab, Food & Drink, or search “wine”
Windows 10 and 11 Windows key + period opens the emoji panel; type “wine”
macOS Control + Command + Space opens the character viewer; search “wine”

On every one of them the search term that works is “wine”, not “glass” – the CLDR keyword list puts wine first.

Caveats worth knowing

  • Screen readers announce it as “wine glass”. Repeat it ten times and it is read out ten times, which is unpleasant rather than decorative.
  • It takes no skin tone modifier and has no text-presentation fallback, so it is always full colour or nothing.
  • Plenty of username fields, some payment references and most system identifiers reject it outright.

The character itself and its combos are on wine emoji copy and paste; the colour question is answered on white wine emoji; the toast characters are on champagne emoji copy and paste.
