Copy Paste Bar

Bar Emoji 🍸 🍺 🎷

This page is about bars that serve drinks, not bar charts or loading bars. Unicode has no bar emoji, so a bar sign is something you assemble: glassware, brass, cards and dice, plus finished strings you can copy in one tap.

Tap any tile to copy it. Nothing is sent anywhere — the copy happens in your browser.

Repeat it 100, 1000 or 10,000 times

100 copies — 1,299 characters.

Three different things are called a bar

The phrase splits at least three ways: the place that serves drinks, the bar in a bar chart, and
the progress or loading bar in an interface. This page serves the first one only. If you came for a
chart or a loading indicator, nothing below will help and you should leave now rather than scroll.

There is no bar emoji. There is a set

Unicode never encoded a bar, a pub or a tavern. What it encoded is the contents, and a bar sign is
therefore something you build. That suits a copy-paste tool and defeats a one-character-per-page
dictionary.

The repeat tool above is seeded with a short bar sign. Repeating it across a chat window is
exactly what people use this kind of string for.

What renders and what does not

The glassware and the brass are full-colour emoji everywhere. The rest is not, and this is the
part that catches people out.

  • The four suits are old text characters with a text default. On most platforms β™  and
♣ render as flat black glyphs in your font rather than as colour emoji, and they inherit the
surrounding text colour and size. Some apps upgrade them to colour when a variation selector is
    appended; many do not.
  • The dice faces βš€ to βš…, U+2680 to U+2685, are text-only on every major
platform. They will never be colour emoji and they render small next to a beer mug. Use them
    knowingly, not by accident.
  • Vendor art drifts. Google shipped a beer mug for a while whose foam head floated detached above
the liquid and a cheeseburger with the cheese under the patty; both were redrawn after enough people
pointed it out. Artwork is not part of the standard and can change under you.
  • Screen readers read the official names in sequence, so a six-character bar sign is announced as
six separate nouns. Keep signs short in anything that needs to be accessible.
