Where "up to 100" stops

The phrase has two readings. Most people mean multiply up to x 100, so 3 x 100 = 300, and that is how the grid below runs. Some mean only the multiples that stay under 100, which stops far earlier. Both endpoints:

2 times table up to 100

Doubling. Every product is even, and every even number up to 200 appears exactly once. 2 x 50 lands on 100 and 2 x 100 is 200.

3 times table up to 100

The digits of every product add to 3, 6 or 9. 3 x 47 is 141, and 1 + 4 + 1 is 6. Nothing lands on 100 exactly: 3 x 33 is 99, 3 x 34 is 102.

4 times table up to 100

Double, then double again. 4 x 26 is 26 to 52 to 104. It hits 100 exactly at 4 x 25 and finishes at 400.

5 times table up to 100

Products end in 5 and 0 alternately: odd multipliers give the 5s, even multipliers give the 0s. 5 x 20 is 100 and 5 x 100 is 500.

6 times table up to 100

The 3 times table doubled, so every product is even and its digits still add to 3, 6 or 9. 6 x 16 is 96, the last one under 100, and 6 x 100 is 600.

7 times table up to 100

No digit shortcut. The last digits cycle in tens: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0, then repeat. 7 x 14 is 98 and 7 x 100 is 700.

8 times table up to 100

Doubling three times: 8 x 13 is 13 to 26 to 52 to 104. The last product under 100 is 8 x 12 at 96, and 8 x 100 is 800.

9 times table up to 100

Add the digits of any product and keep adding until one digit is left; it is always 9. 9 x 11 is 99 and 9 x 100 is 900.

The signs in the copy grid

Three characters serve as the multiplication mark in written work and they are not interchangeable. ⋅ Dot Operator (U+22C5) is the raised dot of typeset algebra. ∙ Bullet Operator (U+2219) fills the same slot in a heavier weight. ∗ Asterisk Operator (U+2217) sits centred on the math axis, unlike the keyboard asterisk, which is raised toward cap height. All three are Mathematical Operators, U+2200 to U+22FF. The X shapes ✕ U+2715 and ✖ U+2716 are Dingbats, and only the heavy one is in the emoji set, which is why Apple, Google and Samsung draw it in color in some apps and leave it black in others.

Honest caveats

  • ∗ Asterisk Operator is not the keyboard asterisk. Markdown, code editors and search boxes recognise only the keyboard one, so emphasis and wildcards stop working.
  • ➕ ➖ ➗ are emoji, so size and color come from the platform, not your font. Mixed into digits they sit taller than the numbers.
  • Screen readers say each character’s Unicode name, not the operation.
  • Homework boxes usually expect a plain x or *. Paste ✖ into one and the answer can be marked wrong.
