What the character is
The official Unicode name is Chocolate Bar and the codepoint is U+1F36B. It was added in Unicode 6.0 in 2010. Every major vendor draws it partly unwrapped, with a corner of foil or paper still on and one or two squares broken off. That partial wrapper is doing real work: without it the character would read as a brown rectangle, and it is the reason the emoji is legible at the size a phone actually shows it.
There is no chocolate cake emoji
This is the honest answer to a common search. Unicode has no chocolate cake character. What exists is:
| Character | Official name | Codepoint | How it is drawn |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🍰 | Shortcake | U+1F370 | A pale cream slice with a strawberry — never chocolate |
| 🎂 | Birthday Cake | U+1F382 | Whole round cake with candles, frosting colour varies |
| 🧁 | Cupcake | U+1F9C1 | Paper case, swirled frosting |
| 🍮 | Custard | U+1F36E | Caramel-topped set pudding, not chocolate |
So people write it as a pair: 🍫🍰 for a chocolate slice, 🍫🎂 for a chocolate birthday cake. It is a convention, not a character, and the reader has to do a little work. The candles version is on birthday cake emoji; the paper-case one is on cupcake emoji; the whole set sits on the cake emoji hub.
The sweets that travel with it
🍬 Candy, U+1F36C, is a wrapped sweet with twisted ends. 🍭 Lollipop, U+1F36D, is a spiral disc on a stick. 🍯 Honey Pot, U+1F36F, is a pot with a dipper, and it gets used far more often for the word “honey” as a term of endearment than for actual honey. All three are Unicode 6.0.
Rendering across platforms
The codepoint is what you copy; the drawing comes from the reading device. Apple Color Emoji is shaded and glossy. Google’s Noto Color Emoji, on most Android phones, is flatter. Samsung ships its own set on Galaxy phones. Windows uses Segoe UI Emoji, redrawn in the rounder Fluent style with Windows 11. WhatsApp, Twitter/X, Facebook and Discord all supply their own artwork regardless of the phone. The wrapper colour on 🍫 and the number of visible squares change with every one of them.
What people use it for
Craving posts and snack messages, gift and Valentine’s captions, shop and menu listings, recipe titles, and stand-ins for “sweet” or “treat” in habit and reward trackers. It also pairs constantly with ☕ Hot Beverage — see coffee emoji.
Caveats
- Chocolate Bar has no skin-tone modifier and no variation selector. Single codepoint, copies clean.
- Screen readers announce it as “chocolate bar”, not “chocolate”.
- “Chocolate ASCII art” is hand-typed characters, not Unicode. Block art breaks in proportional fonts and in chat boxes that collapse spaces.
- Old databases on MySQL’s three-byte utf8 cannot store it; the symptom is the character disappearing on save.
